Promptchan is an AI image generator with a chat feature bolted on, not the other way round, and it has the most detailed style engine I have tested. This Promptchan review covers the gem economy, the style and pose system, the four pricing tiers, the chat, and the two things nobody mentions: free generations are not private, and on a free account my test image never finished rendering at all. There is also a safe mode, which is rarer in this category than it should be.

TL;DR: is Promptchan worth it?
- What it is: an AI art platform from VisionAI Labs Limited in Dublin, built around image and video generation, with an AI girlfriend chat attached.
- Standout feature: a proper style engine with named, versioned models grouped into Photoreal, Hyperreal, Anime, Illustration, Render and Legacy.
- Safe mode: on by default and it works, hiding NSFW behind overlays across the whole site.
- Free tier: 0 gems a month. You get SD-quality casual generations at slower speed with rate limits, and 20 chat messages per three hours.
- Real catch: private generation is a paid feature. On free, what you make is not yours alone.
- Pricing: Plus from $9.99/mo annually, Premium from $15.99/mo, Pro from $21.99/mo.
- Costs: 2 gems per generation, 1 gem for an in-chat image, 33 gems for an in-chat video.
- Best for: people who want fine control over art style and are willing to pay for Pro.
- Skip it if: you want a companion app. The chat is the weakest part of the product.

What is Promptchan and who runs it?
Promptchan is an AI art creation service that has been around since at least 2023, going by the testimonials on its own pricing page, and the footer names the operator as VisionAI Labs Limited at The Black Church, St. Mary’s Place in Dublin. The site claims over 100,000 Pro users.
The product splits three ways: Explore is a community gallery of generated art, Create is the generation studio, and Chat is an AI girlfriend layer. There is also a Daily Tasks system, a Discord community, an affiliate program and, unusually for this category, a public API with its own documentation. That last one tells you Promptchan thinks of itself as an art tool rather than a girlfriend app, and the product bears that out.
The first thing you notice on Explore is Safe Mode, on by default, replacing explicit thumbnails with a lock and a Safe Mode Enabled label. You can turn it off, but you have to choose to. Almost nothing else in this category ships that way, and it makes Promptchan the rare adult platform you can open on a laptop without immediate regret.
How good is the Promptchan style system?
This is the best part of the platform and the reason to use it over a generic generator. Rather than one model with a style dropdown, Promptchan offers a library of named, versioned art models sorted into categories: All Styles, Photoreal, Hyperreal, Anime, Illustration, Render and Legacy.

Each model card carries a version badge, a release year, a like count and a one-line description of what it does:
- Realism XL 2 (new, 2026): fully true-to-life photos, natural skin, like a real camera
- Anime XL 2 (new, 2026): ultra-detailed anime with exceptional prompt accuracy
- Hyperreal XL+ (2023): extra hyperreal look, perfect skin, sharp features, enhanced realism
Keeping older models available under a Legacy tab is a nice touch that image tool users will recognise, because a style you built a look around does not vanish when a new version ships. The newest models are Pro-locked, so free and Plus users work with the older generations.
What controls does the generator give you?

More than most. The Create panel holds:
- Style: the model library described above
- Poses: character pose or scenario presets, with custom and multiple poses on Pro
- Filters: visual look presets layered over the style
- Emotion: character facial expression
- Negative Prompt: words or styles to avoid
- AI Character v2.0: reuse a reference image for consistent characters across generations, gated behind an upgrade
- Attributes: a toggle for character tuning covering age, build and body proportions, which you can switch off entirely for non-character images
- More Settings plus a separate Video tab
Two design decisions I liked. Separating Filters from Style means you can put a look over a model rather than picking one baked-in combination. And making Attributes a toggle, with an explicit note to disable it for non-character images, shows someone thought about people generating scenery rather than people.
The prompt box shows the cost before you commit, at 2 gems per generation. In the chat, an image costs 1 gem and a video costs 33.
What happened when I generated an image on the free plan?
Nothing, and that is the honest answer. I entered a deliberately tame prompt, a man in a grey wool overcoat under a street lamp on a wet cobbled street at night, and pressed generate. The canvas filled with a loading shimmer and stayed that way for more than five minutes across several page reloads. It never returned an image during my session.
The explanation is in the footnotes of the pricing page. Free accounts get zero gems a month. What they can use are Casual Generations, defined in the small print as unlimited SD-quality image generations at a slower speed, with rate limits. Priority Access is a paid feature, so free work goes to the back of a queue.
Compare that with GeneratePorn.ai, where a free trial image came back in fifteen seconds. Promptchan’s free tier is not a trial of the product, it is a demonstration that the product exists.
Are free Promptchan generations private?
No, and this is the single most important line in the comparison table. Private Generation appears as a paid feature, available on Plus, Premium and Pro, and marked with a dash on Free.

Pair that with the copyright answer in the site’s own FAQ, which states that you own the images you generate but grant Promptchan a copy to use for its website, and the picture is clear enough. On a free account you are generating in public, and your output can appear in the gallery you were browsing earlier. If you intend to generate anything you would not want attached to a public feed, the cheapest plan that fixes it is Plus.
I am not calling this hidden, because it is printed plainly in the comparison table. I am calling it the thing most people will not read before they start typing.
How much does Promptchan cost in 2026?
Four tiers, priced monthly or annually, with a permanent-looking 20 percent sale on the monthly rates.

| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Gems/month | Chat | Image quality |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | – | 0 | 20 messages / 3 hrs | SD |
| Plus | $11.99 | $9.99/mo, $119.88/yr | 100 | 40 messages / 3 hrs | HD |
| Premium | $18.99 | $15.99/mo, $191.88/yr | 400 | 100 messages / 3 hrs | HD |
| Pro | $26.99 | $21.99/mo, $263.88/yr | 800 plus unlimited casual | Unlimited | 4K |
The tier that matters is Pro, and Promptchan is not subtle about it. AI video, voice calls, 4K images, custom poses, the AI Character tool, video extension, images and video inside chat and early access are all Pro only. Plus and Premium buy you gems, higher quality and more styles, but the feature list barely moves between them.
Read that as a two-plan platform with two decoys in the middle. If you want what Promptchan can actually do, the answer is $21.99 a month annually. If you only want more gems, Premium at $15.99 gives you four times the allowance of Plus for six dollars more, which is the better of the two middle options.

Gem maths: at 2 gems a generation, Plus buys 50 images a month, Premium buys 200 and Pro buys 400 on top of unlimited slower SD work. Paid plans also get 50 percent off gem top-ups, and there is a separate Get Gems route for people who do not want a subscription at all.
Is the Promptchan chat any good?
It is the weakest part of the platform, and the design around it is better than the writing inside it.

The discovery layer is genuinely fun: a swipe interface, left to skip and right to chat, with style filters covering Cinematic, Art, Anime, Hyperanime, K-Pop and Fur, plus gender filters and the same safe mode toggle. Every profile opens on a written scenario rather than a bio, and the scenarios are specific and non-sexual: an escape-room tournament where she has mistaken you for the strategist, a glassblowing studio where you both reach for the same piece.
The chat itself does not live up to that setup. I told Carly I had never done an escape room, gave my name and said I was visiting from Lille. The reply came back in a lowercase texting register, called me robin instead of Robbin, and dropped the narrated-action style of the opener entirely. The content was decent, with a genuinely useful tip about not crowding one puzzle and checking under things, but the voice collapsed between message one and message two.

For comparison, OurDream.ai lets you pick between six chat models and tune the writing style, and Lovel.ai holds character across turns without being asked. Promptchan’s chat is a feature, not a product.
The supporting tools are better than the engine: group chats, a My Persona setting for how the character sees you, character creation, voice options and a Call v2 feature for voice conversations. Free accounts get one custom character and starter voices, with the rest on paid tiers.
How does Promptchan compare to other AI image platforms?
| Platform | Type | Style control | Free generation | Entry price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Promptchan | Adult art platform with chat | Versioned model library | SD, slow queue, not private | $9.99/mo annual |
| GeneratePorn.ai | Adult generation studio | Two models | 1 free image, fast | No subscription |
| AnimeGenius | Anime art and video | Anime focused | Limited | Mid-range |
| SpicyGen | Adult video generator | Video first | Limited | Mid-range |
| GetImg AI | General creative suite, SFW | Broad | Generous | Mid-range |
What are the pros and cons of Promptchan?
Pros
- Versioned style library with named models, release years and a Legacy tab so old looks stay available.
- Safe Mode on by default, which almost nothing else in this category does.
- Separate Style, Filter, Pose and Emotion controls rather than one combined dropdown.
- Attributes can be switched off for non-character images.
- Costs shown before you generate, on the button itself.
- Fully published comparison table covering every feature across all four tiers.
- Clear copyright answer: you own what you generate.
- A real public API with documentation, plus an affiliate program and Discord community.
- Swipe-based chat discovery with written scenarios instead of bios.
- Named operator with a registered Dublin address.
Cons
- Free accounts get zero gems and a slow queue. My test generation never completed.
- Private generation is paid only. Free output is not private.
- Everything interesting is Pro. Video, voice calls, 4K, AI Character and custom poses all sit on the top tier.
- Plus and Premium are thin, differing mainly in gem count.
- Chat writing is weak, dropping character voice and misreading my name after one message.
- Video costs 33 gems in chat, which burns a Plus allowance fast.
- Permanent 20 percent sale on the monthly prices.
- Best styles are locked, so lower tiers work with older models.
Is Promptchan safe to use?
Better documented than most. There is a named operating company with a registered Irish address, a published API and affiliate guide, a Discord community with visible moderation, a guide section and a contact route. The FAQ answers the questions people actually ask, including what happens to your gems if you cancel and who owns the copyright on your output.
Safe Mode deserves specific credit. It is on by default, applies across Explore and Chat, and requires a deliberate action to disable. That is the correct default for a site people might open anywhere.
The privacy caveat is the one to take seriously, and it is a plan-level issue rather than a trust issue: on a free account your generations are not private, and the terms grant the platform a copy for use on its website. If that matters to you, do not generate anything on the free tier.
Frequently asked questions about Promptchan
Is Promptchan free?
There is a free tier, but it includes 0 gems a month. You get SD-quality casual generations at slower speed with rate limits, 20 chat messages per three hours, one custom character and starter styles. Private generation, HD images and priority queueing all require a paid plan.
How much does Promptchan cost?
Annually, Plus is $9.99 a month ($119.88 a year), Premium is $15.99 a month ($191.88), and Pro is $21.99 a month ($263.88). Monthly rates during the current sale are $11.99, $18.99 and $26.99.
What are gems on Promptchan?
Gems are the generation currency. An image costs 2 gems, an in-chat image costs 1 and an in-chat video costs 33. Plus includes 100 a month, Premium 400 and Pro 800 on top of unlimited casual generations. Paid plans get 50 percent off gem top-ups.
Are Promptchan generations private?
Only on paid plans. Private Generation is listed as a Plus, Premium and Pro feature and is unavailable on Free. The FAQ also states that you own your images but grant Promptchan a copy for use on its website.
Does Promptchan have a safe mode?
Yes, and it is enabled by default. Safe Mode hides NSFW content behind overlays across the Explore gallery and the chat section until you deliberately turn it off in settings.
Can Promptchan make videos?
Yes, but only on Pro. AI video, video extension, video with voice and video inside chat are all restricted to the top tier. In-chat video costs 33 gems per clip.
Who owns the images you make on Promptchan?
According to the platform’s own FAQ, you own the images you generate, but you grant Promptchan a copy to use on its website. The full terms carry the detail.
My verdict on Promptchan
Promptchan is a proper art tool wearing an adult platform’s clothes. The style library with versioned models and a Legacy tab, the separation of style from filter from pose from emotion, the published comparison table, the API, the clear copyright answer and safe mode on by default all point at a team that has been doing this since 2023 and knows what image tool users want. Nothing else in this batch has that texture.
The problems are the free tier and the tier design. Zero gems, a queue that never delivered my test image, and non-private generation make the free plan close to useless, and stacking video, voice, 4K, the AI Character tool and custom poses all on Pro makes the two middle tiers look like scaffolding. The chat, meanwhile, should not be why you sign up. If the style engine appeals to you, budget for Pro at $21.99 a month annually and treat everything below it as a gem allowance rather than a version of the product.
